Robert Cornthwaite letters, 1852-1853.

This collection consists of five handwritten letters to William Bernard Ullathorne, the Bishop of Birmingham, while Cornthwaite was serving at English College. The letters discuss the progress of current students, admittance of new students, and planning of events at English College.

Robert Cornthwaite, Catholic Bishop, was born in England and ordained the Canon of Hexham and Newcastle. Afterwards, he served as Rector for English College in Rome from 1851-1857. Named Bishop of Beverley in 1861, his diocese was then divided into that of Leeds and Middlesborough in 1879. He died on June 16, 1890. From the description of Robert Cornthwaite letters, 1852-1853.
